Fresh Vegetables in City X and City Y

by Mclaughlin » Sat Jun 21, 2008 3:46 pm
A greater number of fresh vegetables are sold in City X than in City Y. Therefore, the people in City X have better nutritional habits than those in City Y.

Each of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion above EXCEPT

a. City X has more people living in it than City Y.
B. Most of the people in in City Y work in City X and buy their vegetables there.
C. the people in city X buy many of their vegetables as decorations, not to eat.
D. The per capita consumption of junk food in City X is three times that of City Y.
E. The average price per pound of vegetables in City Y is lower than the average price per pound of vegetables in City X.

OA E

Can someone please explain?! I chose B. But please tell me why the OA is the OA.

This is an except Q. As soon as I see an EXCEPT Q I list out which actually do the weakening or strengthening. once you that, The cave at is NOT to look for polar opposites, in other words all the below weaken except can have an answer that does not strengthen, but can be out of scope.

B says A lot of people in City Y work in City X are buying V's in City X. So greater sales of V's is not coming from City X people and hence possibly City X people are not more nutritious than people of City Y.

E says, the avg price per pound of V's in City X is > than city Y. Still People of X are buying more V's than Y people does. They probably care more about nutrition than people of Y. Does not weaken

Hence E
Please do not post answer along with the Question you post/ask

Let people discuss the Questions with out seeing answers.

E is the answer. E is nothing to do with the relationship between nutrition and the amount of vegetable sold...

in a weaken except question, anything that is irrelevant is considered eligible for the 'except' bin

same goes for strengthen except questions...

The answer that jumps out to me is E as well.

The stimulus assumes that more vegetables bought means better nutritional habits. But what if people are buying more veggies for other reasons? The "other reasons" are our "WEAKENERS." As other people mentioned, because this is an EXCEPT question, look for everything that weakens the argument and cross those out. Those answer choices that either strengthen or don't weaken (could have no place there...irrelevant or out of scope included) could be the answer you're looking for.

B wouldn't work because it actually weakens the argument. First of all, people are from City Y not X. The argument here focuses on people of City X. And second, they're buying veggies from City X because its more convenient not because they're more health conscious. This offers another reason as to why people are buying veggies...

This question is copy of question # 67 in OG 11, Page 487. If you are not convinced with explanation here, you could refer explanation in OG.

BTW, I know this coz I just did this question yesterday :)
