Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs, merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors.
A merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors
B merging the nuclei of atoms instead of splitting them apart, like nuclear reactors
C merging the nuclei of atoms rather than splitting them apart, as nuclear reactors do
D and merges the nuclei of atoms but does not split them apart, as is done in unclear reactors
E and merges the nuclei of atoms, unlike atomic reactors that split them apart.
Nuclear fusion

D and E are out. POWERS .... MERGES - changes the meaning
Like is wrong for phrase comparison. B is out.
AND NOT SPLITTING THEM APART - Wrong
OA?

What's the source? E changes the whole meaning. It brings atomic reactor in the picture from nowhere!!!
Nuclear fusion is the force that powers[/b]<<trim the fat>>> the Sun, the stars, and hydrogen bombs,<<need connector>> merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors.
Just follow the hints above which is in rewrite format then you can answer by yourself that what is the OA.
Isnt it E

OG 11 #104 SC. It is C. There's an error on the sheet.
sounds like this problem is both a "like" vs "as" problem as well as identifying parallelism.
E would be correct if it says "and that merges..." and rephrase the end part somehow to include "which" because "that" suggests a specific set of nuclear reactors that split nuclei. So does that mean there are nuclear reactors that do something else?

it's from the OG and the OA is actually C
IMO,the D and E are wrong because the 'and' means that 'nuclear fusion' is the subject, rather than 'the force', of the verb 'merge'.
then A is out
between B and C, the 'like nuclear reactors ' in B might mean that nuclear reactors merge the nuclei of atoms as well, it's equivocal.
but 'as nuclear reactors do' in C expresses clearly.

I don't see this question in my OG 12 edition. What number ?

it's the 104 in the 11th edition...maybe absent in the new OG.
according to the OA,
B: 'Although like can grammatically be followed by a noun such as nuclear reactors, here the basis of comparison is unclear, and the usage is incorrect'

it is advice and request ..not to post ques from 1000sc..as they are quite weird and wrong answers because there is not authenticity of the ques.
