Certain pesticides can become ineffective if used
repeatedly in the same place: one reason is suggested by the finding that there are much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes in soils with a relatively long history of pesticide use than in soils that are free of such chemicals.

(A) Certain pesticides can become ineffective if used repeatedly in the same place; one reason is
suggested by the finding that there are much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes in
soils with a relatively long history of pesticide use than in soils that are free of such chemicals.
(B) If used repeatedly in the same place, one reason that certain pesticides can become ineffective is
suggested by the finding that there are much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes in
soils with a relatively long history of pesticide use than in soils that are free of such chemicals.
(C) If used repeatedly in the same place, one reason certain pesticides can become ineffective is
suggested by the finding that much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes are found in
soils with a relatively long history of pesticide use than those that are free of such chemicals.
(D) The finding that there are much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes in soils with a
relatively long history of pesticide use than in soils that are free of such chemicals is suggestive of one
reason, if used repeatedly in the same place, certain pesticides can become ineffective.
(E) The finding of much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes in soils with a relatively long
history of pesticide use than in those that are free of such chemicals suggests one reason certain
pesticides can become ineffective if used repeatedly in the same place.

A seems to be the best option.
But, if there is a colon in the question stem(In bold above), there is no correct answer(IMO).

Can come down to A and C, IMO:A

Colon makes no sense there.
Either the question stem is wrong or the whole question is wrong.

i think the colon is ok, because of the word "reason". the word "reason" suggests that the next sentence is an explanation of the previous one, so there should be a colon

'suggests that' is preferable over'is suggested ..that'

(E) The finding of much larger populations of pesticide-degrading microbes in soils with a relatively long history of pesticide use than in those that are free of such chemicals suggests one reason certain
pesticides can become ineffective if used repeatedly in the same place. This has proper parallel structure - the finding of x in y than in y.. suggests..

I think the ans is E

Hi, Although you are asking for an expert opinion, allow me to give my 2 cents.

The first choice I Eliminated was option B-- "If used repeatedly in the same place, one reason"-- This is incorrectly modifying "One Reason" .. Also the sentence formation is very awkward.

Same goes for option C as well.

Then I jumped to option E (I do that almost all the time btw -- jumping to last option first if I find the original bit awkward! :) ) -- I feel that the overall sentence formation is not correct. Totally vague and full of ambiguity.

Although, option A is not like the usual answer (airtight), it is the best of the lot.

IMO A

I eliminated E coz the structure of the sentence is
The finding of X in Y and in Z suggests one reason certain that...

here the sentence implies that "the finding is suggesting one reason"... its like "John is suggesting his mother" ..Probably, if it was "The finding... suggests that use of pesticides... ", it could have been a probable choice.
IMO "that" is missing

Hope that helps.
