Katharine Graham!

by gmat_perfect » Wed Jul 07, 2010 12:34 pm
It was only after Katharine Graham became publisher of The Washington Post in 1963 that it moved into the first rank of American newspapers, and it was under her command that the paper won high praise for its unrelenting reporting of the Watergate scandal.

(A) It was only after Katharine Graham became publisher of The Washington Post in 1963 that it moved into the first rank of American newspapers, and it was under her command that the paper won high praise

(B) It was only after Katharine Graham's becoming publisher of The Washington Post in 1963 that it moved into the first rank of American newspapers, and under her command it had won high praise

(C) Katharine Graham became publisher of The Washington Post in 1963, and only after that did it move into the first rank of American newspapers, having won high praise under her command
(D) Moving into the first rank of American newspapers only after Katharine Graham became its publisher in 1963, The Washington Post, winning high praise under her command
(E) Moving into the first rank of American newspapers only after Katharine Graham's becoming its publisher in 1963, The Washington Post won high praise under her command

How I analyzed:

See the non-underlined portion of the sentence.
for its unrelenting reporting of the Watergate scandal.

Now, join with this the options CDE.

Under her command for its unrelenting reporting of the Watergate scandal.

=> the bold face changes the intended meaning of the sentence.

What is the actual deal with B?

Would any one explain in detail?

How many errors can be found in the option B?

Thanks.

A) Must be the correct answer - "it was...that it moved" is parallel to "it was...that the paper won" These constructions do seem a bit wordy, but there is no acceptable alternative given.
B) "Katharine Graham's becoming" is awkward. Hard to put the finger on everything here, but the past perfect "had won high praise" seems incorrect. Seems like the two Independent Clauses are unparallel as well.
C) Pronoun error - "that" does not have a clear antecedent
D) Sentence fragment - "winning" is a participal here and the subject of the sentence, "The Washington Post" has no finite verb
E) Possessives cannot be antecedent because they are not nouns - hence "her" cannot refer to Katharine Graham in E

Yeah, 'E' is wrong, not sure what I was thinking. I change my answer to 'C'.

Pick A.

Since and is a parallel connector, notice the parallelism in A.

It was only after Katharine Graham became publisher of The Washington Post in 1963 that it moved into the first rank of American newspapers, AND it was under her command that the paper won high praise for its unrelenting reporting of the Watergate scandal.

B uses past perfect incorrectly. simple past for "it was only after" and past perfect for "it had won high praise", which comes later chronologically than when Katharine Graham became publisher.

Hope that helps..

Before posting the question, I have read this idea from Stacy's post. I could not figure it out. Do you have any better idea regarding the option B?

Thanks.

Past perfect tense is used to indicate that one action occurred before another action in the past. So basically past perfect tense indicates the first of the two actions.

Chronologically, the first event to occur is Katharine Graham becoming publisher of The Washington Post and then the paper won high praises. The paper won high praises because of Katharine's hard work that she put in after becoming the publisher.

We can't use simple past tense for the first event and the past perfect tense for the second event as done in B. The order should be past perfect tense for the first event and simple past tense for the second event.

Apart from Tense issue, B doesnt maintain the parallelism as option A does. Plus, "Katharine Graham's becoming publisher of The Washington Post" is an awkward construction. "Katharine Graham became publisher of The Washington Post" is better.

Hope that helps..

My OA is A.
The reasons:
1) It maintains parallelism
2) pronouns 'it' and 'her' have proper antecedents
