News and violent crime

by beat_gmat_09 » Sat Nov 20, 2010 12:07 am
Unlike newspapers in the old days, today's newspapers and televised news programs are full of stories
about murders and assaults in our city. One can only conclude from this change that violent crime is now out of control, and, to be safe from personal attack, one should not leave one's home except for absolute necessities.

Which one of the following, if true, would cast the most serious doubt on the conclusion?

(A) Newspapers and televised news programs have more comprehensive coverage of violent crime than newspapers did in the old days.
(B) National data show that violent crime is out of control everywhere, not just in the author's city.
(C) Police records show that people experience more violent crimes in their own neighborhoods than they do outside their neighborhoods.
(D) Murder comprised a larger proportion of violent crimes in the old days than it does today.
(E) News magazines play a more important role today in informing the public about crime than they did in the old days.

i cant focus today... bad emo but is that D the answer?
the the logic is that police concluded that the number of crimes is increasing and out of control so nobody should leave home if its not neccessary. the proof for this argument is that the newspaper news programs are full of stories about murders and assaults in the city
we have to weaken this. D says the newspapers in old days reported more number of crime than the newspapers do today

IMO A

A: Violent crime has actually not increased but the coverage has increased and more comprehensive now. Clearly weaken the argument.
B: Just a neutral response that Strengthens Authors Argument.
C: What ever may be the case but at the end people experience more violent crime. Strengthen.
D: Weaken the argument but not to a degree as option A does. Also proportion of violent crime is out of scope as per premises.
E: Does not go with the argument.
If the problem is Easy Respect it, if the problem is tough Attack it

A
It casts doubt that may be during the old days the crime was at similar level, however the media (Newspaper/televised news) was not available to cover them.

What's wrong with C but?
It negates the conclusion that by saying that even if someone doesn't come out of his/her home, still he/she can be a victim...
