Kap test-UPPERCLASSMEN

by bryan88 » Sat Mar 10, 2012 12:21 am
Between 1960 and 1966, the State University system had 92 percent of its capacity filled by students. During this time the system admitted 31 students each year for every 100 available spots in the system; the remaining 61 spots were filled by upperclassmen. From 1967 to 1975, the State University system filled 99 percent of its capacity with students; however the system also lowered its admission rate to 23 students for every 100 available spots each year.

If the statements above are true, which of the following conclusions can be most properly drawn?

A) As a university system's admission rate falls, it is generally true that the percent of capacity filled increases.
B) The number of available spots in the State University system declined between the two time periods.
C)The proportion of young people applying to college increased between the two time periods.
D)The number of people dropping out before finishing their degrees declined between the two periods.
E)The average length of time that a student stayed in the State University system increased between the two time periods.

It came down to the options A and B. I chose A and not B. Very close call between A and B.

B is wrong because it states that the empty places or blank spots declined. In short it is going from percentage to numbers. Lets say between 1960 to 1966 the overall capacity of the university was 100 students and the overall capacity of the university between 1967 to 1975, was 1000.
Then option B would be proved to be wrong...

Option A can be inferred based on the data given and not considering any other assumption or outside data...

Hope this is right and this explanation really helps... BTW wat is the OA???

If the statements above are true, which of the following conclusions can be most properly drawn?

A) As a university system's admission rate falls, it is generally true that the percent of capacity filled increases. We cant say what happens generally
B) The number of available spots in the State University system declined between the two time periods. Cant say because only the percentage is mentioned
C)The proportion of young people applying to college increased between the two time periods. Irrelevant
D)The number of people dropping out before finishing their degrees declined between the two periods. Probably yes, keep it for now!
E)The average length of time that a student stayed in the State University system increased between the two time periods. with increase in avg length of time of new entrants, the occupancy (capacity filled) will not be affected
IMO D
whats the OA??

I am sorry for choosing option A. Option A is out of scope. I do not think that A really can be inferred as both admission by merits and admission to upperclassmen can be given at the same time.
There is nothing to do with the overall capacity...

Whatever the explanation is given for the option B is correct though...

But option A cannot be the OA and Option E can be inferred from what is given...

IMO E...

A is wrong, since some general views are discussed.- As a university system's admission rate falls, it is generally true that the percent of capacity filled increases.

B.The number of available spots in the State University system declined between the two time periods
it is not necessarily true, since nothing is said about the decrease of spots filled by upperclassmen

c.The proportion of young people applying to college increased between the two time periods.
young ppl of colleges are out of scope

D.The number of people dropping out before finishing their degrees declined between the two periods.
again out of scope, since the number of ppl dropping out finishing the university doesnt really affect the number of ppl admitting to the university

E is correct. The average length of time that a student stayed in the State University system increased between the two time periods.
it means, that upperclassmen still study and because of them more spots for freshmen are not available
Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.(c)

E)The average length of time that a student stayed in the State University system increased between the two time periods.
The ADMISSION rate DECREASED (from 31/100 to 23/100).
The FILL rate INCREASED (from 92% to 99%).
How can the system ADMIT a lower percentage but FILL a higher percentage?
The UPPERCLASSMEN must be STICKING AROUND.

Answer choice E: The average length of time that a student stayed in the State University system increased between the two time periods.

The correct answer is E.

Hi Mitch,

E looks logical but B can also lead to 99% filling of seats and decrease of admission rate

Please share your thoughts about B

Always note when an answer choice changes the scope.
The passage is about PERCENTAGES.
Answer choice B is about an actual NUMBER.
A decline in the PERCENTAGE of available spots does not mean that the actual NUMBER of available spots declined.

3. Strengthen
4. Weaken
5. Resolve the paradox
6. Method of reasoning
7. Flaw in reasoning
8. Parallel reasoning
9. Evaluate the argument
10. Assumption

I believe scope is important in all question types apart from strengthen and weaken question. Please correct me if I am wrong

Thanks a lot for your help
