New Packer thesaurus

by maihuna » Thu Jan 08, 2009 6:44 am
A publishing expert recently judged the about-to-be published Packer thesaurus to be extremely accurate, very portable and less expensive than other thesauri currently available on the market. Thus the publisher of the Packer thesaurus has concluded that the Packer thesaurus will become a best-selling, inexpensive alternative to those thesauri currently available.

Which of the following, if true, casts the LEAST doubt on the conclusion of the Packer thesaurus’ publishers?

Many booksellers already carry a large number of inexpensive thesauri and have no incentive to stock another.

A large number of new, portable and more accurate thesauri will soon be introduced by other publishing companies.

The Packer thesaurus is not only as accurate as other portable thesauri, but it is also at least as accurate as many larger, more expensive thesauri.

Buyers in homes and offices who have been identified by the publishing company as the prime market for the Packer thesaurus already own thesauri.

The publishing expert who assessed the new Packer thesaurus employed standards that are not relevant to the public’s buying patterns.

I do not have the official answer to this particular question. However, since the author states "casts the least doubt..." it should be the one that agrees with the conclusion (a little tricky wording). Given that fact, the only choice that does not cast doubt upon the conclusion is answer C.

maihuna,

What are the sources of your problems ?

One more vote for C by the way for the stated reasons above.

C:
This is a causal argument, and this answer eliminates an alternate cause (for buying a different thesaurus), thus strengthening the argument.
