Hello Everyone

Need your help on verbal section of GMAT and how to improve it in 2 months time. My first GMAT attempt was pathetic with very less preparation and dedication. Prepared for one month, gave it a shot on April and got 580 (Q47 V23). My verbal score was very low as i am a non native speaker.

Started preparing again two weeks back and I took the diagnostic test in the OG12 to know where I stand then went through the concepts in OG12 for quants and verbal. Target score is 700+. As of now am off from work for 2 months till I finish my GMAT so giving my maximum effort. Had been working so far on finding out where my score goes down. I brushed up the concepts again and then started solving the problems in OG 12. For the past one week I had been solving 60 questions (20 each in SC, CR, RC and 30 each in DS, PS) in both the sections roughly 3 - 3.5 hrs for each section - 2 hrs for solving and 1 to 1.5 hrs for review. I am able to finish the questions in time but getting 45% - 70% accuracy in CR and RC whereas in SC and quants am getting 75% - 90%. I have almost finished the OG 12 yet no improvement :(

Have the following books with me as of now:

OG 11 Verbal and Quant review
OG 11, 12 GMAT Review.
All MGMAT Books

In CR and RC I was not able to go down to which specific type of questions I go wrong. Majority in CR were strengthen and weaken questions I get confused and choose the perfect wrong answer :( Yet I wouldn't say those two were my only weak points other questions too go wrong. Moreover when it comes to CR and RC the concentration level goes way too badly with those science and history topics :(

Tried the Manhattan's CR and RC strategies but writing notes consumes more time roughly 3 mins for each problem though hit rate increases. Not sure if it will increase in 2 months time with practice. Any suggestions on how to improve CR and RC or any strategies would be very helpful.

While each person's level is different, I will tell you what I would have tried to do if I was in the same situation as you are right now with 2 months to spare.

Seems like you are ok with you quant score of 47 but if you are targeting 700 a 48/49 would boost your chances. Find Jeff Sackman's extreme challenge and Must_gmat_problems.doc from the net. The second one is available on this site itself for download. Just search for it. It will help with a better math score.(It contains GMATPrep questions, so a little careful with doing it if you plan to take GMAT Prep tests)

What you could be doing wrong is not learning any lesson from the questions you solved.

For SC: I would recommend understanding the Manhattan SC fully. It will introduce all GMAT concepts. Then you need to solve all OG problems (again) by understanding what each question tests and noting down the learnings.
Practice: OG 12 and V, Aristotle SC and maybe BTG SC section.

For RC: it is universally agreed that RC is Tough. Practice is the only way out. Noting down points and then improving speed is the only solution. WHy don't you try reading articles in papers daily and try noting down points for each para? It might help you improve comprehension skills.
Practice: General reading, OG 12 and OG V, RC99 (extremely good for RC preparations)

FOR CR: Try the powerscore CR bible to get a good hang of CR. I am not a big fan of the Manhattan CR/RC book cos it is too much text with too little output.
Practice: OG 12 and OG V (must), LSAT CR (Aristotle prep free)

Practice tests: 2 months is about 8-9 weeks. Target 10 practice tests on a weekly basis. Maybe towards the end, you can take more. Take as many possible with AWA as it is important to build stamina for a 4 hour gruelling session of GMAT.

Read the I just beat the gmat forum for inspiration and tips. Nothing like it. My entire post is just a summary of the material. (But dont practice too much)
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)

Thanks a lot for your suggestion vineesh. Will try to get those quants materials and work on it.
What you could be doing wrong is not learning any lesson from the questions you solved.
I couldn't unlearn and learn anything new with respect to CR and RC :(. I figure out the right answer for some of the CR problems when i review it. One more thing which you mentioned about the comprehension skills.
WHy don't you try reading articles in papers daily and try noting down points for each para? It might help you improve comprehension skills.
It might be one of the main reason i am not consistent in CR and RC. Thanks for pointing out :) CR powerscore was way too descriptive than Manhattan so haven't touched it yet. Will work on verbal after familiarizing with powerscore :).

Actually Powerscore is way better than the Manhattan book. Manhattan CR book is too descriptive. Powerscore book looks big but each page has few lines of text in it. SO try it out.

Hello There

Firstly we would say that stay positive and such anxieties are common during exam preparation time. Juggling between work and studies is tough so you need to define a significant time for your GMAT preparation. Sometimes taking few days off work for preparing for the GMAT can help a person tremendously. If you have time this may not be a bad idea. Take practise GMAT tests to see how you are doing. If you cannot do that don't worry. What might work instead is to set aside 1-2 hours at night on weekdays and major part of your weekend to study and prepare for GMAT- in this case we will suggest a good 2-3 months preparation.

However we recommend you to keep taking practise tests to gauge your performance. It will help you in identifying your weak areas and you can focus on them accordingly.

There are various ways you can use to practise for your GMAT. You might need to change your practise style and try this combination to provide you flexibility and different styles to practise so it doesn't get monotonous.

It could be combination of-

1-Books- Books like- The Official Guide for GMAT Review, The Official Guide for GMAT Verbal Review, The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review etc could be used.

2-Online Study Guide: Websites like Knewton, Grockit etc provide you with practise questions online.

3-Smart phone applications- Kaplan, Veritas etc offer applications to prepare for GMAT on your smart phones.

Let us know if it was helpful for you.
