Strategy needed for a non-native speaker

by mbrown10012 » Thu Aug 12, 2010 12:31 pm
Okay, so I have completed Doing Grammar and Manhattan's SC. A month ago, I was recommended to to tackle these two books before practicing SC questions. Would now be a good time to practice SC questions? Should I start with OG10 or OG12?

I'm assuming the excel file offered in this forum will benefit me exponentially?

Any type of comments or strategy is appreciated.

It's now time for you to practice SC questions. I presume that you've made important concepts/points flashcards while studying these 2 books. OG is the best resource to start with. You may either start OG11/12. Just know that when you complete OG11, you will find lots of questions getting repeated in OG12. To supplement your practice, you may also consider buying OG Verbal review 2nd edition. It's worth buying it.

Personally, I'd leave the OG until you're into the middle of your preparation. You should leave yourself enough time to do all of the question and to REVIEW all of the ones that you got wrong, took too long on, guessed on, and even the ones that you got right (to make sure you did them in the best way). You don't want to do the OG problems so far in advance that you forget about their feel by test day.

If I'm not doing the OG problems, which ones should I tackle?

You could do the older ETS papers on MBA.com's website. Or you could do the flashcards from Manhattan GMAT and from this website.

Save the OG problems for last because I'll get a much getter grasp of it later? Is this your reason? Strategy sounds interesting as some students can run through all the OG problems without recognizing their weaknesses....

P.S - Are you referring to the flash cards download on the top of this forum? If not, can you please link me? Thank you for your time.

I agree that you should save OG for last.

Yeah, the flashcards in the resource section.
Save the OG problems for later because that way you get the exact "feel" for them. Manhattan GMAT math questions are good but they don't have the exact same feel. However, you need to have enough time to go over you mistakes until they no longer are a problem.

So after studying the flash cards, then proceed to the OG questions or start studying theoretical concepts for CR?

I don't plan on taking the Gmat until a year later....So I'm just trying to absorb like a sponge..

If saving OG questions for last, I guess I can do some of the other SC practice such as kaplan etc?

Kaplan is ok, but probably not the greatest. However, beyond the ETS papers I'm not sure where to point you. I'd just make sure you know the Manhattan SC book really well, and that you start the OGs early enough that you can really spend some time reviewing your answers. Since you have over a year you could probably do some of the OG problems now and then leave them alone for a couple months so that you forget the answers.
