Hi All,

Should I pursue a Traditional MBA at University of Alabama in Huntsville ( ACCSB, lies in top 15%) OR an online MBA at either University of Florida (internet MBA) or Indiana University (Kelly Direct)? Both UF and IU online MBA programs are in the very top, nationwide, I think.

Cost is not a matter for me (my employer pays for it). Difficulty is not a problem for me either.

I would like to know which one is more valuable in term of quality and employer's perspective?

It has been really difficult for me to decide which option should I pursue.

I truly appreciate your advice and suggestion on this matter.

Thank you so much in advance.

Dear gmatlearner:

Online MBA programs are unique. While you might get the textbook knowledge of the subject matter, you are not getting the additional networking and team-learning experience that has always been a significant part of the MBA experience. You need to think about what you want to get out of your MBA: just the mastery of the subject matter or do you want the full experience of working with people and expanding your professional network? Likewise, there is learning that happens in a classroom during discussions of cases and professional experiences of your classmates. While many online programs have some of that due to the prevalence of instant messaging/chats, it is different from sitting in a classroom for 90 minutes. I don't say this to discourage the online options as they are not lesser programs, but for you to think about what you are looking for in a program beyond the subject matter.

Good luck!

Lisa,

Thank you very much for your thoughts.

I have been studying for at UAH for about a semester. I am doing great. While I learn the materials, have interactions with classmates, and everything of that sort, I do not find much "networking". Many students have their own lives. Even though it is a traditional program (in class), most students are working professionals.

I am more concerned about the quality of the two programs (UAH vs. UI or UF) and employer's perspective. How would the employer value either UAH (traditional) against UI or UF (online)? I know it sounds like I am worried too much about employer's consideration but isn't it a reality? I am not fan of online education but I want to earn a "good" MBA. I know I am in the "reputation" trap.

By the way, my background is in engineering but I would like to eventually move into more human and bussiness sides. I may go back to school and pursue ph.d. education for teaching.

Again, thank you very much for your thoughts, Lisa.

Best wishes to you.

Dear gmatlearner:

My suspicion is most employers familiar with MBA programs are biased towards classroom-based options as they feel there is value in the classroom setting. Of course, there are many employers that have not been a large recruiter of MBAs in the past that might not see any difference between an online program and a classroom-based program. You need to consider what industries/employers you wish to pursue in the future as well as any potential costs of starting a new program (many do not accept transfer credits) when reaching your decision.

Regards,
Lisa
