Prepping for the GMAT in 3 months

by smbacke » Sat Jul 10, 2010 1:14 pm
Here's a little about me! I am 29 years old with a BS in Business Education. I have desired a Masters in Accountancy. However, I have a family; therefore, I had to put my education on the back burner for a while. My 3 daughters are school age and I am now ready to get complete my education/career goals. My background consist of customer service, mortgage origination, and banking. Due to a huge hit in the mortgage industry, I had to settle for a job with security as a Disability Examiner. I have plans to attend NC State University by Fall 2011.

I have scheduled my exam for October 7, 2010. I get high anxiety when it comes to test taking. Therefore, I am looking for all sorts of advise and strategies to help me achieve a 700 on the first test. I took my first practice 3 nights ago, using the Manhattan CAT. I received a score of 500, (Q39, V21). Obviously, my biggest struggle well be the verbal section. I performed horribly in sentence correction and reading comprehension. I have high hopes that with the wealth of knowledge available here and my dedication to studying, I will reach my goals.

Currently, I am utilizing the following tools for my studies: the Manhattan GMAT series (with the exception of the critical reasoning book), OG 11th, Verbal Review, Quantitative Review, Kaplan Premier 2008-2009, and PowerScore Critical Reasoning. I am looking forward to participating in the community. Good luck to all my fellow test-takers!!
Just getting started!!

Hi smbacke,

Welcome to the community! You've found the right place for your preparation.

Your resources are wonderfully selected. I would like to point out couple of things. Regarding the strategies, you have two different books - Manhattan GMAT and Kaplan Premier. Both prep companies employ different strategies for verbal. So, you need to make sure that you don't practice both their strategies. You may try out both strategies and see which one works for you fine.

You've mentioned that you're using OG 11. You may try out OG12 instead of OG11 for two reasons: 1. OG12 questions are the most representative questions of actual GMAT as it is recently published, 2. Manhattan GMAT strategy books complement OG12 questions for practice. If you don't have any budget problems for purchasing books, then you may get OG12.

My $0.02! Good luck!
