E !

(A) x is greatest, let x = 100, y = 0, x-y = 100
(B) y is greatest, let x = 100, y = 100000, x-y <0
(C) x is least, let x = -100, y = 10000, x-y <0
(D) y is least, let x = 100, y = 0, x-y = 200
(E) x is greatest and y is least, x = 1000000, y = -1000000 , x-y = 2000000

Just random numbers used !

I don't think that (E) is the best answer or the presentation is the best explanation to this question.

Are we free to call greatest or least for an x which is already addressed as given?

Yeah! Should be D, since x is already defined in the question stem.
But why would 'E' mention x is greatest - ?
