Geologists once thought that the molten rock known as lava was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, sporadically erupting through volcanoes, but they now know that it is continuously created by the heat of the radioactivity deep inside the planet.
1. was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, sporadically erupting
2. had been an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days and sporadically erupted
3. was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, which sporadically erupted
4. would be an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days that sporadically erupted
5. was an underground remnant of Earth's earliest days, having sporadically erupted

Doesn't "C" also sound good. The tense is past so we stick to simple tense which is prefered hence was, but should created by and erupted be in paralle with each other?

Am I missing something here?

'which' modifies the word that comes immediately before it. In option C which modifies days which is incorrect.

A for me as well

imo A

in C 'which' is modifying 'days' which is incorrect as then it would mean that ''days sporadically erupted'' and not the lava

How did the "'underground remnant of Earth's earliest days' errupt----

"sporadically errupting"

hence "sporadically errupting" desrcibes/modifies how "underground remnant of earth" errupted

Modifiers correctly modifers "remnant"

Its an adverbial phrase

Just a small clarification .. shouldn't 'sporadically erupting' .. be in line with 'continuously created' .. keeping the present continuous tense of erupting .. shouldn't the sentence read 'continuously being created' ??
