Kaplan syas the OA is A.
the explanation given is


George Eliot didn't become
George Eliot, as (B)-(E) have it. She became known as
George Eliot. The words "became" and "had been" indicate that her anonymity occured earlier than her fame.

but when already have before why do we need use past perfect?
I did go thru the old threads but cud not find any expert reply.

You use "had been" to indicate that the action occurred over a period of time. The past perfect indicates duration.
