Deciding On MBA Programs To Apply To

by Stacy Blackman Consulting, Dec 11, 2011

Candidates often spend a long time developing their list of MBA programs to apply to. This is understandable, as the list you create is an important part of the application process. As you beginning creating your list, one important question to ask yourself is: How committed am I to going to school next year? Am I set on attending only my first or second choice, or am I determined to go to school somewhere?

Some candidates are happy with their current job and will only go back to school to attend a top choice. If you set on attending only one school, understand that applying to one MBA program is a risky strategy, no matter how impressive your candidacy is. Other applicants may put together a longer list in order to maximize their chances of success. This will be a personal decision that each candidate will have to make.

Another important factor is the type of MBA program that you decide to apply to. Depending on where you are in your life, some programs may be a better fit.

One-Year ProgramsA number of excellent options exist for individuals who only want to attend a one year MBA program. These programs are expedited versions of the two-year program and applicants will leave with the same set of knowledge. In general, these programs are best for candidates with consistent goals and who want to return to the work force quickly.

  • An important note is that a one-year program that runs 12 months, beginning in the summer, eliminates the possibility of a summer internship. Thus, this is an ideal program for those who already have a solid business base and are not seeking significant changes to their career path.
  • An intermediate-length program may run for around 16 months, and is geared to students who are returning to their prior job or a family business, or who are planning to start their own business and thus do not require a summer internship.

Executive MBA (EMBA)The Executive MBA is right for the more experienced professional, who is already advanced in his or her career. A number of interesting programs target this market.

  • Some MBA programs have even joined together to offer programs such as bi-coastal MBA experiences for executives.
  • Certain schools offer particularly innovative EMBA programs, in some cases ones that leverage Internet-enabled distance learning and incorporate international residencies in order to show students international aspects of the current business world.

Part-Time or FEMBA (Fully Employed MBA)The part-time business school program is geared for the individual who wants to earn an MBA but cannot take time away from career. The part-time programs will enable you to balance school on a part-time basis with your full-time job. You graduate with the same degree and education, although frequently it takes a bit longer to get through the curriculum.
