MBA or Masters of Accounting?

by salesian » Fri Aug 21, 2009 9:54 am
Hi Stacy,

I am currently debating on either the MBA or Masters of Accounting program. My ultimate career goal is to become an Accounting Professor and consulting on the side, but would like to move up in industry throughout the years. I would also like to get a PHD in Accounting.

Which program would you recommend?

Note: I currently have my CPA license

Thanks

Dear salesian,

If your ultimate goal is to get a PhD in accounting and be a professor, then I think you could do either program. Very few MBAs go on to a PhD program as the degree is a professional degree, so it is possible you will need to provide a good rationale in your application and interviews as to why you chose the MBA versus the MS route. Likewise, you should consider if you want to have a broad business foundation that the MBA gives you, or if you would prefer to focus your coursework in accounting only like the MS. Finally, I think you should consider applying directly to PhD programs; there are some PhD programs that do not require a master's degree first and/or you will earn a master's degree in your first 2-3 years of the PhD program.

Good luck,
Lisa
