MBA after MSF?

by mba_chaser » Fri Jul 01, 2011 1:06 am
Hi,

This fall I will start my MSF with a top-ranked liberal arts college on the west coast whose undergrad program is considered among the best feeders for business school.I am wondering ideally, how long it is after the MSF that I should apply for business school (I'm considering 1-2 years) and whether such an MSF will help my application at all? Say I am targeting organizational behaviour/management/consulting concentration at top 15 MBA programs.

I've got 2.5 years work experience in management consulting with a big 4 auditing firm in Vietnam. My current plan is to come back to Vietnam or another South East Asian market to work in finance/consulting.

I went to a no-name university in Vietnam for undergraduate studies. My undergrad GPA is 7.89/10 and GMAT 750/98 percentile. I voluteered for an international student organization as a team leader for more than 1 year during college

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi,

Thanks for your post. Congratulations on your decision to obtain your MSF. In regard to your question about MBA application timing, you'll want to work for at least 2 years post degree prior to applying to bschool. If you apply to early after obtaining your degree, bschool adcoms might think you are what is known as a "degree collector." This is someone who keeps applying for and obtaining advanced degrees either because they lack focus or are afraid to join the real working world. Applying to bschool too soon after receiving your MSF could turn some heads and raise some red flags.

Best,

Stacey

Thanks a lot for the reply.

Also, how do you think the admissions office would view the MSF in my profile? Will an MSF from a top-ranked liberal arts college add value to my application or will it dilute my diversity factor in the process?

Hi,

It's pretty safe to say that an MSF from a top university will only strengthen your academic profile in your MBA applications.

Best,

Stacey
