Splits seen

"between" and "in how/how"
"determine" and "determining"

Here "between" needs "and", so Options D and E are out, since they don't have "and"

Option B==Incorrect usage of "determining"

"subtle difference" needs "help" and not "helps"

So also "difference is how the ears hear" and not "how a sound is heared"

Option A wins

Also i think both options A and C are contenders, but it might be a "active voice" and "passive voice" issue. I may be wrong, since i am not much into active voice and passive voice.

Hope i am right. Good one Rahul. What is the source?

Source: Some Random PDFs I am solving :)

Yep, your reasoning is correct..

However, I would also like add more on the usage of "between" & "in"

"Differences between" --> not always needs "and"

So, for this reason.. {B} & {E} is wrong...

For Example: the differences between the two twins are displayed in stark relief when they argue with each other.

It's more depended upon "number of things".

"C" has "helps" issue.. so Only {A}

As always bang on target

A. in how the two ears hear a given sound help the listener determine

B. in the two ears hearing a given sound help the listener in determining....Two ears hearing??? This is wrong the meaning of the sentence is to say the ability of two ears in hearing. This just changes the meaning....Moreover, In determining is not correct idiom.

C. in how a sound is heard by the two ears helps the listener determine....differences is plural and need plural verb.

D. between how the two ears hear a given sound helps the listener in determining....differences is plural and need plural verb

E. between how a sound is heard by the two ears help the listener in determining....This choice uses passive voice. If we have active in
A
we prefer active voice. Moreover, in determining is wrong.

So
A
is the correct answer.

I believe that this SC is from GMAT Prep.
In human hearing, subtle differences in how the two ears hear a given sound help the listener determine the qualities of that sound.

A. in how the two ears hear a given sound help the listener determine
B. in the two ears hearing a given sound help the listener in determining
C. in how a sound is heard by the two ears helps the listener determine
D. between how the two ears hear a given sound helps the listener in determining
E. between how a sound is heard by the two ears help the listener in determining
In C and D, helps (singular) does not agree with differences (plural). Eliminate C and D.

In E, between must refer to two things; it cannot refer only to how a sound. Between how a sound is heard AND what? Eliminate E.

In B, differences in the TWO EARS does not convey the intended meaning. The differences here are not in the ears themselves but in how the two ears HEAR. Eliminate B.

The correct answer is A.

Certain verbs (see, hear, watch, make, help) can be combined with the bare infinitive, the infinitive form of a verb with the to omitted.
The typical construction is SPECIAL VERB + DIRECT OBJECT + BARE INFINITIVE:

John heard the dog bark. (bark = bare infinitive, to bark with the to omitted)
Susan is watching her son play baseball. (play = bare infinitive, to play with the to omitted)
You made me love you. (love = bare infinitive, to love with the to omitted)

In the OA above:

Subtle differences help the listener determine. (determine = bare infinitive, to determine with the to omitted).
