Manhattan guide test prep order....

by jbon815 » Mon Jan 14, 2013 7:37 pm
just a general question. it's been a solid 10 years since i've done any math, so this question is focused more on the math aspects of the study guide... in which order did you work through the study guides??? which order would you recommend if you were to do it again or plan on going through them again???

for a quick reference it goes
0) GMAT roadmap
1) fractions, decimals, percents
2) algebra
3) word problems
4) geometry
5) number properties

-----------------------
6) critical reasoning
7) reading comp
8) SC
9) integrated reasoning/essay

If you follow the Beat The GMAT Study Guide (https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/gmat-guide), the order of the math topics is as follows:

- General Math Strategies
- Arithmetic and Fractions
- Percent
- Ratios
- Powers and Roots
- Algebra and Basic Equations
- Functions, Formulas and Inequalities
- Coordinate Geometry
- Word Problems I - Basic Question Types
- Word Problems II - Rates, Work & Overlapping Sets
- Word Problems III - Variables in the Answer Choices and Minor Question Types
- Geometry
- Integer Properties
- Statistics
- Counting
- Probability
I think this is a great order to tackle GMAT math concepts.

All of the Manhattan GMAT strategy guides are designed to be self-contained; you don't need to read them in any particular order. It's a good idea to begin with the Roadmap, which gives general advice for how to approach your plan of study. Next, I would recommend taking a practice exam (either the GMATPrep practice exam from mba.com, or a free practice exam through www.manhattangmat.com). Then look over your results to determine which content areas need the most work, and start with those strategy guides.

With any topic on the GMAT, it's important to practice real Official Guide (OG) problems in addition to reading the strategy guides. For example, let's say you just read the chapter on polygons in the geometry guide. Rather than just moving on to the next chapter, you should practice a handful of OG polygons problems to see how the GMAT tests the concept. (You'll find the comprehensive list of OG problems at the back of each guide). Doing OG problems topic-by-topic will give you a more complete understanding of the concepts, by seeing how they're put together on the real test.

Good luck!
