GMAT Guidance Required Please

by pskharche » Sat Sep 10, 2011 4:55 am
Hi All -

This is Parijat here and require some serious guidance and help on the GMAT admission and stuff -

Firstly, my background -

1) GMAT score - 600 (attempt 2) 560 (attempt 1) AWA - 4 (both attempts).

2) First class with distinction in Engineering from a reputed Engg college in Pune University, India.

3) 3 years and 1 month work experience, till the time I am typing this in a reputed MNC with good profile. (2 promotions in 3 years). Outperform Award winner, and recognized by team lead many a times.

4) Active member of extra curricular activities in Work Location as well as in college. (Organized a National Level Technical competition in College).

5) Want to pursue MBA in a good University in US.

Questions (appreciate if some one can answer them individually)-

1) Is TOEFL required? If yes, when is the latest I need that to take? So that my applications to universities are not late?

2) Which Schools to apply for? Are there any chances for me for -

Boston University - School of Management - MBA, Full Time
( Yes / No )
City University of New York - Baruch College - Zicklin School of Business - Full-Time MBA
( Yes / No )
University of California - Davis - Graduate School of Management - MBA, Full Time
( Yes / No )
University of Pennsylvania - The Wharton School - MBA
( Yes / No )
University of Rochester - William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration - MBA, Full Tim
( Yes / No )

3) Do schools refer to the latest score / Average score / minimum score while thinking for admissions.

4) Your suggestions if this is a good time for me to apply? Should I be waiting for one more year (My age is already 25)? Another shot @ GMAT?

I know I am sounding a bit too ignorant about things happening around me - but if you can please help.

Your advice / suggestions and comments are greatly appreciated!!

Best Regards,
PK

First off, Parijat, welcome to Beat the GMAT!

I see that you have 3+ years of experience currently with a highest GMAT of 600.
The main concern here is that you are part of a highly competitive pool of candidates - the Indian IT Male.
I would suggest you do a bit of self-introspection and see if you can get a higher GMAT score.
That way, your target schools will come within your reach.

Cheers!

Prateek and Enigma -

Many thanks for your replies. I had been working all this while on my verbal and gave the GMAT again today and you know what??

I am DEVASTATED....

I got a mere 490 score
with a score of 45 in Quant and 14 (pathetic) in Verbal.

I am shocked to see my report card. You know I missed 2 questions to answer in my Quant section today and still i managed 45.

And I could not manage to get even a 50 percentile :'(

Anyways this was my 3rd attempt -

Can you please help me answer each of the questions below - I need a shoulder to cry on :(

1) My maximum score is 600 and I sent this score via the GMAT exam to 5 institutes. They might also know my previous scores. Would they average out my score or select the "best" of all?

2) I belong to the biggest pool of applicants (Indian IT male). Considering they keep my best score (600)do I stand a chance to get into any above - average Business school if yes which one?

3) I have 3 years work ex. (as of now)and can manage a letter of RECO from my Senior Exec.

4) Considering the time which is left to apply for B-schools this year. Should i give my last try to GMAT again?

5) What are the maximum number of times I can appear for GMAT?

6) is TOEFL mandatory? I have not yet taken it? Will it affect schools I am applying to?

7) What if I take admission to a school with 600 score and do my best during the school tenure? Will I have any chance of standing shoulder to shoulder with a guy who is from a better school? In regards to package and work profile etc.?

Many thanks in advance !

I would be obliged if you answer my questions.

Thank you.

-Parijat

Hi Parijat,

First of all pump up your energy because it is not such a big disaster! Yes, we know it was your third attempt but that doesn't mean that you have lost everything. You just need to sit back and re-think on your weak areas as we don't feel to give you basic preparation based suggestions

Yes, you have a tough competition from your Indian as well as foreign counterparts but that is what will bring the best in you.

Although there is no limit on the number of times you can take GMAT, you may not take the GMAT more than once during any calendar month, even if you've quit the test or cancelled your scores. You need to think of a score of above 700 as it will work for you. Regarding TOEFL, it is mandatory for MBA candidates from non-English speaking countries and for non-native English speakers.

What kind of help are you seeking regarding TOEFL? Are there any additional queries that you have on our answers? We will be happy to assist you

GMAT Score:750

Hey Parijat,

First off, sorry to hear about a rough GMAT attempt! As Kavita mentioned, if you reflect on what went wrong you can make a lot of headway toward fixing it.

As you've asked about admissions chances at those schools and the round 2 deadlines approach, I should at least mention that one thing struck me. Other than Wharton, the schools you're targeting are all pretty good opportunities for someone with a few rough patches on their candidacy.

If Wharton wanted to fill its entire class of lefthanded Indian males with 740+ GMAT scores it would probably still have to create a waitlist. With a 600 you're throwing a lottery ticket at Wharton...there are just too many candidates quite like you but with higher scores, so your odds are extremely slim.

But at Simon/Zicklin/BU/Davis...you have a shot. Their average GMAT scores are still fairly high, but those are programs that want someone who wants to be there. No school wants a pack of students who wish they had gotten into their first choice; they want people who want exactly what that school has to offer. So the mere fact that you've listed those specifically bodes well for you. You can craft an application that demonstrates exactly why you want to go to those schools, and that will serve you well.

Now...I'd feel a lot more confident if you had a score even 30-40 points higher, and it sounds like you're going to work toward that. Even at 600 I don't think you'd be immediately thrust into the recycle bin (whereas at Wharton...I have to figure that's your fate as your application currently stands), and toward the mid-6's I feel good about your applications to those schools. You're a candidate who values the education and prestige of those schools and they'd much rather have you enthusiastically attend at 640 than someone begrudgingly attend at 680.

Your other question about whether or not you should wait - one more year of work experience can't hurt you and could only really help, particularly with your career trajectory as it seems to be going. And that may also give you a good opportunity to bump up your GMAT (and particularly verbal), so I wouldn't see round 2 as your last chance...you'd be fine waiting a year especially if you can use it to enhance your candidacy (and build up a little extra bank account). So you're still in an enviable position overall.

A few other things:

-Schools won't average your scores. You're applying with a 600 as unless you can raise it.
-The prestige value of an MBA degree is only one factor in career success, but it's fairly substantial. McKinsey and Goldman Sachs probably won't recruit at Olin or Baruch...they just don't need to since they'll fill their entering classes with high achievers from top 10 programs. So there's that to consider. But so much of success is based on what you do after that first job, and it's quite possible to land a good banking/consulting/marketing job coming out of a top 30 school and then prove your worth from there. The education at the slightly-lower schools isn't going to be all that different...the real difference is likely to be in that set of interviews/opportunities available to you right at graduation. But if you can take advantage of those, you're in a good position to succeed overall.

Just one man's opinion, but hopefully it's helpful...
