Let S1 be sum of salaries of m managers and S2 be that of d directors.
S1/m = (S1 + S2)/(m+d) - 5000 -- (1)
S2/d = (S1 + S2)/(m+d) + 15000 -- (2)
From (1) we get S1 = m(S1+S2)/(m+d) - 5000m
From (2) we get S2 = d(S1+S2)/(m+d) + 15000d
Adding both we get S1 + S2 = S1 + S2 + 15000d - 5000m
Then 15000d = 5000m hence we know the ratio of m to d and hence we can calculate the one that is asked in the question.

Excuse me Calista but I dont see how you get, when adding both statements, that "m(S1+S2)/(m+d)" is S1 and that "d(S1+S2)/(m+d)" is S2.
....S1= m(S1+S2)/(m+d) - 5000m by saying that only "m(S1+S2)/(m+d)" equals S1 I dont see how that can be possible....
The same with S2. If S2= d(S1+S2)/(m+d) + 15000d, how can you say that only "d(S1+S2)/(m+d)" equals S2??

Are u agree with the two equs -
S1 = m(S1+S2)/(m+d) - 5000m -- (1)
S2 = d(S1+S2)/(m+d) + 15000d -- (2) ?
Now add this two equ.,
so (S1 + S2) = (m + d)(S1 + S2)/(m + d) - 5000m + 15000d
or (S1 + S2) = (S1 + S2) - 5000m + 15000d

Request you to do this with pen-n-paper and the u will find that the confusion will go away!
