Rock samples........have been dated....and thus are

This eliminates A and B, incorrect usage of "has"

option D, "are" is missing. incorrect usage "thus evidence", We need a linking verb "are" to connect the subject "rock samples" with its verb "evidenced"

I would like to know if there are any other errors in D.

Option C changes the meaning, "dated to be"

Option E Clear and concise.

First of all there is no subordinate clause. Indication of that is there is no comma,

Independent clauses are differentiated either through semi-colon or cordinating conjunction.

Subordinate clauses or phrases are always introduced with comma.

Coming to your question.

What can be dated here. Only "Rock samples taken from remains of asteroid"

Rock samples = plural, have= plural

Hope its clear.

Subordinate means non essential or non restrictive clauses. Such clauses are marked with commas

That is an essential or restrictive modiifer means its not subordinate/non-essential and hence no commas ( as you understood)


In the sentence, we have that meaning we have restrictive modifer and not subordinate or non essential modifier

hence, no commas are there


hence, you reference to that clause as subordinate is incorrect

There is one little exception to the rule that I mentioned.

If the subordinate clause is an adverb clause, introduced at the end of the sentence, comma is not used to separate it from the main clause.

Hope this helps.

I apologize for the delayed response. Here is the difference between the two.


Samples dated at 3 million years old - dated back in time

Samples dated to be 3 million years old - actual dated time

Let me know if you guys think otherwise, to be honest I am confused myself now.

Rock samples taken from the remains of an asteroid about twice the size of the 6-nuke-wide asteroid that eradicated the dinosaurs has been dated to be 3.47 billion years old and thus is evidence of the earliest known asteroid impact on Earth.

A. has been dated to be 3.47 billion years old and thus is

B. has been dated at 3.47 billion years old and thus

C. have been dated to be 3.47billion years old and thus are

D. have been dated as being 3.47 billion years old and thus

E. have been dated at 3.47billion years old and thus are
