Magazine Publisher

by mgmt_gmat » Fri Feb 12, 2010 2:32 am
Magazine Publisher: Our magazine does not have a liberal bias. It is true that when a book review we had commissioned last year turned out to express distinctly conservative views, we did not publish it until we had also obtained a second review that took a strongly liberal position. Clearly, however, our actions demonstrate not a bias in favor of liberal views but rather a commitment to a balanced presentation of diverse opinions.

Determining which of the following would be most useful in evaluating the cogency of the magazine publisher's response?
A. Whether any other magazines in which the book was reviewed carried more than one review of the book
B. Whether the magazine publishes unsolicited book reviews as well as those that it has commissioned
C. Whether in the event that a first review commissioned by the magazine takes a clearly liberal position the magazine would make any efforts to obtain further reviews
D. Whether the book that was the subject of the two reviews was itself written from a clearly conservative or a clearly liberal point of view
E. Whether most of the readers of the magazine regularly read the book reviews that the magazine publishes

Determining which of the following would be most useful in evaluating the cogency of the magazine publisher's response?

A. Whether any other magazines in which the book was reviewed carried more than one review of the book
Incorrect : Other magazines in which the book was reviewed is irrelevant.

B. Whether the magazine publishes unsolicited book reviews as well as those that it has commissioned
Incorrect : There is no mention of UNSOLICITED book reviews in the stimulus above. Eliminated.

C. Whether in the event that a first review commissioned by the magazine takes a clearly liberal position the magazine would make any efforts to obtain further reviews
Correct : If the first review took a liberal position would the magazine make efforts to get further review. The answer to this question would be most useful in evaluating the congency of the publisher's response.

D. Whether the book that was the subject of the two reviews was itself written from a clearly conservative or a clearly liberal point of view
Incorrect : The content of the book is not an issue here. Eliminated.

E. Whether most of the readers of the magazine regularly read the book reviews that the magazine publishes
Incorrect : Readers of the magazine.......... Clearly out of scope.

Hope this helps : )

Answer should be C

Explanation : Magazine publisher claims their magazine is not biased. He goes to ertain extent that he gets it reviewed for a second time & turns out to be Liberal postion.

Now, How can we evaluate his stand??We can ask him..Mr. Publisher , Will you go for one more round of review if on the first go that magazine would have been reviewed as Liberal Position?? Will u for a second opinion??

Now comes Mr. Publisher's answer..If he says Yes Mr Inquisitive, We always Go for SECOND opinion. Then in that case, we can accept" whole heartedly" that Magazine is NOT BIASED.

Ok what if we say No for our Mr. Inquisitive's question??? Hmm..tat would mean that the whole Magazine teams wants to identifies as "Liberal postion" stand Magazine only & they are biased to Liberal.

SO C identifies the right question need to eb asked by Mr. Inquisitive.

I always create a imaginary character while solving Cr based questions. This ine makes me to read the Knit picky answers very critically. Hope u can have fun also when u r reading them ....
