Researchers are studying plastics

Researchers are studying plastics that dissolve at differnt
rates, and they are finding that the so-called "quick
disintegration" plastics are taking more time to
deteriorate than they originally seemed.
(A) they originally seemed
(B) they seemed originally
(C) it seemed that they would originally
(D) it originally seemed
(E) it originally seemed they would

This is from Kaplan. OA is E. I went to D, since it seems more concise. For me THEY WOULD is implied so it is not necessary. please explain.

It creates an ambiguity . It seems as if time is being compared to plastics.
Better would be option E. Idiom: More X than Y. Both X and Y should be comparable..

Sorry, sameerballani, I do not understand your explanation. I'm not sure that the More X than Y is an issue here, since we compare two cluses

I believe 'they would' should be used because it is a hypothetical situation.

Expert opinion would be appreciated.

Idiom used: More X than Y, which is correct, but we need to make sure Both X and Y should be comparable. That is either both of them should be time or both of them should be plastics.
