When he phones her, she tells him to stop calling, but he acted as if he had not understood her.

1.she tells him to stop calling, but he acted as if he had not understood her.

2. she told him to stop calling, but he acted as if he had not understood her.

3. she tells him to stop calling, but he actes as if he did not understood her.

4. she tells him to stop calling, but he actes as if he has not understood her.

5. she tells him to stop calling, but he acted as if he does not understand her.

Answer: 4

In the original sentence, "when he calls her" is in present tense (present indefinite tense) & also appears to be the first event. [He calls > she responds > still he pretends]

Hence all the following phrases must be in present or future tense. It means that choice# 1, 2, 3 & 5 are incorrect (these use one or more past tense.)

So #4 is the only candidate.

Had usage is wrong. Hence 1 & 2 are out.
Usage "actes" is wrong. 3 & 4 are out.

"4" seems correct to me.But what does "actes" mean?
shouldn't it be "acts"?

'did not understood her'.. does this sound correct?

should'nt it be 'did not understand her'????

The second part should be (in my opinion -- keep in mind it looks as if the original poster wrote the problem from memory) "he acts as if he has not understood her" OR "he acts as if he does not understand her". The first employs the present perfect has understood to indicate action going right up to the present moment, the second uses the present understand to indicate currently-occurring action. Either would be correct, neither is in the answer choices. :S
