LBS or Oxford or Cambridge?

by M1984 » Fri Mar 30, 2012 3:06 am
Hello everyone,

this is my first post on this site, but I have been a reader of the forums for some months.

I have received decisions from all the schools I applied to and I am hoping that you can help me decide which one to pick.

I have offers from LBS, Oxford, and Cambridge and a waitlist position from INSEAD.

My background is 4 years corporate development in financial services (currently as team manager) and my goal after the MBA is to do corporate development in the high tech / telecom sector.

Obviously, LBS is the best ranked business school among my offers. However, the total cost of the programme is considerably higher than for Oxford or Cambridge. The question I am asking myself now is:

Is LBS worth the investment for me? Or could I achieve my career goal just as well with an MBA from Oxford or Cambridge?

It would really help me a lot if I could hear some thoughts from you on this.

Cheers,
Marco

Hi Marco,

Your decision should be based on your criteria and your priorities. Ask yourself the following questions:

What companies do you want to join afterwards? Does that school invite them? Has it been inviting them in the last 3-5 yrs on a consistent basis?

What kind of brand name do you want to graduate? After all - it matters a lot to you or you would not have spent the time / money applying to these schools. :)

Where do you want to settle after MBA? If you plan to have a business some day, the strong local alumni connection is generally a great support later (with whom you decide to go to school with).

Which school and its culture do you most associate with?

Which school offers the most attractive opportunities? For example: Some of my candidates were very interested in visiting a particular country to study more about their area over there - like an exchange program or a spring break trip.

Which school has the most renowned faculty based on your area of interest? Go to the website, look at the subjects and compare the faculty.

I'd recommend you do comparative analysis and then make the decision.
Hopefully, this helps.

Interesting (and very good) choice. LBS is obviously the better school, but you are very wise for reconsidering everything because as you yourself mentioned, it's not just about "better" but about you reaching your goals. I am wondering, if attending LBS with it's location and obvious Finance strength, might see you return to your previous industry after you graduate (it would be so easy and also so lucrative). On the other hand, Oxford does seem to have a few more Tech elements in their program. Tough call here. (although leaning to LBS for prestige reasons is tempting)

I would suggest talking with people from both schools who have graduated and are in the sector you wish to enter, because they will give you the best evaluation. If you can also get informational interviews with some big tech/telecom companies in the area, and speak to them about who they recruit, that might also be a good idea. And finally, speaking to the schools specifically, telling them "look I also got an admit at place B, and I would really like to find out more about what opportunities there are in Sector X to help me reach my dreams" If you are kind and civil, they can be very helpful (Of course you can take everyone's advice with a grain of salt :) )

Congratulations !!!

I think some post at gmatclub might be useful to you. they relate to visa issues/ bank loans / jobs propects at LBS. An LBS student's account from Businessweek is posted which may be useful. I will only say dont take the rankings at face value as they are often manipulated. (isnt it last year that The Economist placed University of Bath MBA as the top one - give me a break).
