Is x > y ?

(1) ax > ay

if a > 0, we can answer the question Is x > y ? YES
if a < 0, we can answer the question Is x > y ? NO
if a = 0, we cannot answer the question Is x > y ? ??

Insufficient

(2) a^2 . x > a^2 . y

if a > 0, we can answer the question Is x > y ? YES
if a < 0, we can answer the question Is x > y ? YES
if a = 0, we cannot answer the question Is x > y ? ??

Insufficient

agree with st(1) inequality switches signs depending on a +ve or -ve but disagree about st(2)
st(2) should be sufficient as the given condition is ">" and not "=" for 0 on both sides

IMO B

(1) ax > ay

a(x-y)>0 (a and (x-y) have same signs , but we don't know + or -ve so Insuff )

(2) a^2 . x > a^2 . y

a^2(x-y)> 0

we know that a^2 is positive , so x-y > 0 --> x>y (suff)
Smack is Back ...
It takes time and effort to explain, so if my comment helped you please press Thanks button :)
