Keeping track of time...

by GMAT? » Fri Jan 12, 2007 7:14 pm
HI all,

Whats the best way of keeping track of time during the exam:

I'm thinking of keeping to the following plans:

70 mins - Question 35
60 mins - Question 30
50 min - Question 25
40 mins - Question 20
30 mins - Question 15
20 mins - Question 10
10 mins -Question 5

Hows does this sound to you. Its simple basicall divide the time by 2 to get the answer to what question you should be on.

Thanks

I just remebered that the GMAT tells you what question your on rather than how many questions you have left.....so I guess my plans no good.

Any other ideas

so just remember a similar table for where you should be timewise on some round number questions e.g. on question 5,10,20,30. Remember that you can use the time devoted to directions to scrible anything you want onto the weterase board (this table could be one of those things if you are having time management issues).

good suggestion medenica :)

Also you should keep a track of the number of passages still remained
Of course you cannot be sure of no. of RC they would ask but in general GMAC asks 4 passages these days.
you should have more time left if you have more RC to be solved

In my personal timing is as follows
for SC: 1.2 mins
for CR: 2.0 mins
for RC: 7.5 mins ( for a passage)

for quant: 2.0 mins ave.

:D

Hi, I assume the general table you posted (about 2 min per) was for a math section, since you started with 35 questions at the 70 minute mark (math has 37 questions, verbal has 41). Verbal's obviously different both b/c of the greater number of questions and b/c of the time difference you can expect for the different types of questions.

I generally tell students to aim for 1 to 1.5 min for each SC question. Then, the time you save can be used for reading passages and (occasionally) the most complicated CR arguments. Most people need about 2-3 minutes to read the passage and 1.5 to 2 minutes for each question. Most people also generally need about 1.5 to 2.5 minutes per argument (depending on the individual complexity of each argument).

Generally agree. The verbal timing can vary slightly from person to person based on strengths and weaknesses, of course. And for passages - I would use timing based on per question, not per passage, b/c you could have 3 or 4 questions, the passage could be long and complicated or short and sweet, etc.
