All of the members of club Y are either Democrats or Republicans. If 1/2 of the male members and 3/5 of the female members are Democrats, what is the ratio of the number of males to the number of females in the club?

(1) In club Y the number of female members is one less than the number of male members.
(2) In club Y the number of male Republican members is equal to the number of female Democratic members.

All of the members of club Y are either Democrats or Republicans. If 1/2 of the male members and 3/5 of the female members are Democrats, what is the ratio of the number of males to the number of females in the club?

Let the number of males in the club be m and
Let the number of females in the club be f. Then
The total number of Democrats = 0.5m + 0.6f
The total number of Republicans = 0.5m + 0.4f
(1) In club Y the number of female members is one less than the number of male members.

m-f=1
If m = 6 f = 5, and m:f = 6:5
If m = 16 f = 15 and m:f = 16:15. Different answers!
Statement 1 is Insufficient to answer the question.
(2) In club Y the number of male Republican members is equal to the number of female Democratic members.
1/2(m) = 3/5(f)
m:f = 6:5
Statement 2 is sufficient to answer the question.

Let us assume that no. of males = M
and no. of females = F
Male democrats = M/2
Female democrats = 3F/5

(1) In club Y the number of female members is one less than the number of male members.
F = M - 1
Ratio of the number of males : Number of females in the club = M : (M - 1), but we do not know the value of M; NOT sufficient.

(2) In club Y the number of male Republican members is equal to the number of female Democratic members.
Male Republicans = M/2
Female Republicans = 3F/5
M/2 = 3F/5
M/F = 6/5; SUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is B.
