Answer: C
Source: MGMAT CAT
Statement 1: x>y.
If x=2 and y=1, is 2*|1|> 1²?
YES, because 2>1.
If x=-2 and y=-1, is (-2)*|-1| > (-1)²?
NO, because -2<1.
Insufficient.
Statement 2: y>0.
If y>0, then |y| = y.
Thus, since y>0, we can simplify the question stem by dividing each side by y:
Is x·|y| > y²?
Is x > y?
Since statement 2 tells us only that y>0, and no information is offered about x, insufficient.
Statements 1 and 2 combined:
Statement 2 allows us to rephrase the question: Is x>y?
Statement 1 TELLS us that x>y.
Sufficient.
The correct answer is
C.
