if x>1 and y>1, then is x>y?

1.square root x>y
2.square root y<x

x > 1 and y > 1

Is x > y?

A. root (x) > y

Since x and y are both positive, we can square both sides:

x > y^2

x and y are both greater than 1, so we can ascertain that y^2 > y

From these 2 inequalities => x > y

SUFFICIENT

B. root (y) < x

=> y < x^2

or, x^2 > y

We can also say: x^2 > x

Now this cannot lead directly to x > y

This is because, If x = 2, x^2 = 4 and y = 3 => x^2 > y but x < y
Another examples: If x = 3, x^2 = 9 and y = 2 => x^2 > y and x > y

Either case is possible => INSUFFICIENT

Pick A.
