How did get 3 for the answer? I drew a diagram also but my diagram shows more than 5 oranges being in the top row and that's not even one of the answer choices!!

@mlane: Hmmm... Let me pick your brain a bit. How many oranges did you have in your 2nd (middle) layer?

I came up with 8 oranges in the second row for my drawing

OK - I had 8 oranges too and I still got the correct answer, which is 3 oranges on the 3rd layer (very top).

Assuming your 2nd layer looks like this rough sketch:
OOOO
OOOO

Then only 3 oranges can be stacked on top while satisfying the condition in the Question-Stem.

How did you manage to stack another 8 oranges on the top 3rd layer layer without breaking the condition?

ok I think I know what I did wrong now. I drew the second layer outside of my original drawing and came up with 3 oranges staced on top of the second row. Makes sense now. Thanks!

Hi,

the bottommost 3 rows will have 5*3=15 oranges
Second stack will have 4*2 =8 oranges and,
the topmost stack will have just 3*1=3 oranges.

Hope this makes a sense.
