Is this an urban legend ?

by TkNeo » Wed Jan 09, 2008 4:25 am
Beginning questions are more important than later ones !

I have read at many places that pay lot more attention to first 10 questions than to the later ones.. Sometimes i take extra time double checking my answer for those and that causes a little time crunch for the rest of the section...

I thought i should ask if there is an official word on it ? Or is it just a myth we like to believe in ..

Cheers
Tk

There is a post around here somewhere, and I am sure someone will link it.. but NO, they are not more important at all. All questions are equal.

Actually, not all questions are equal, some are more equal. (tsk tsk ;) GMAT throws in research questions randomly throughout the test that are used simply to measure their level of difficulty to be used in scoring for future tests.

I believe from all the posts I've read this is a myth. However, one thing for sure I was burned recently getting several questions wrong consecutively can hurt you. I took the GMAT Prep recently and got 5 questions wrong consecutively (4 RC and 1 SC) and never recovered. The conclusion I reached from the posts and my experience, earlier questions are not weighted anymore than later questions but consecutive questions incorrect (>5) will hurt you.

hmm!

It's a topic of debate. & You will find quite a few threads/topics on this!
But personally I dont believe it. Only one thing I know ( or I learned so far ;) ) answering several questions wrong consequently would harm your score dramatically!

One way to test this would be to take a GMAT prep test (quant) and answer the first 3 questions incorrectly and get the rest right. Then take the test again and get last 3 wrong and all others incorrect...

Probably not a good use of your time to conduct this test. GMAC has confirmed that this is a myth!

Please follow the link Eric posted above. I did test this once, and not on GMATPrep but on the real thing. Read the post to see what happened. (Also, that post contains an explanation of how the myth started - people badly misinterpreted the results of a study.)
