A particular type of nail is sold in containers of 256 for $9.75 and in containers of 128 for $7.75. If an employee needs to purchase 512 nails for his company and buys 4 of the containers of 128 instead of 2 of the containers of 256, approximately how much more money per nail did the employee spend than he would have if he had bought the larger containers?

a) 0.02
b) 0.03
c) 0.04
d) 0.04
e) 0.05

Can some experts help me find the best solution in this problem?

OA A
Total cost of 4 containers of 128 nails each = 4 * 7.75. = $31. Cost per nail = 31/512

Total cost of 2 containers of 256 nails each = 2 * 9.75 = 19.50. Cost per nail = 19.50/512

The difference = 31/512 - 19.50/512 = 11.50/512,

Who wants to do that? Let's approximate. Call it 10/500 = 1/50 = 2/100 = .02. The answer is A.

4 containers of 128 nails each cost 4 x 7.75, so per nail the cost is:

(4 x 7.75)/512 = 7.75/128 ≈ 0.06

2 containers of 256 nails each cost 2 x 9.75, so per nail the cost is:

(2 x 9.75)/512= 9.75/256 ≈ 0.04

Thus, each nail would cost approximately $0.02 more when the employee bought the nails in smaller containers instead of the larger containers.

Answer: A
