Is probability important for GMAT?

by zonda12 » Wed Jan 27, 2010 7:10 pm
For the life of me I cannot wrap my head around probability and combination. My exam's in a week and I don't think the patience to study those topics. So my question is, does it matter that I go into the exam knowing just the basics of prob and combo's? How many questions can one expect to see on these topics?

In real GMAT, you get a maximum of 2 questions from Probability & P&C. I have seen many people not getting a single question from these chapters.

However, it's better to know atleast basics. If you are having a very tough time with these, just forget it!, considering that you don't have much time for the exam. Concentrate on other topics such as Number properties, inequalities, Geometry.

a few days before i took the gmat, a friend of mine told me that he got 4 questions on probability in the exam. So, i panicked and downloaded a couple of probability tutorials from the net. The videos covered basic permutations, combinations and probability. While practicing problems, I found that I was not able to solve complaex problems. I gave up and decided if I see any probability questions, i'll skip them n spend the time saved on the remaining questions.

In the exam, I got (surprise surprise) a total of 4 questions on p&c and probability. Luckily, all these tested the basics and I am pretty sure I got them all correct. Probability questions on the GMAT are not designed to be impossible. They are designed to be tricky & a tad confusing.. all the answer choices will definitely be ones that you could have arrived at. That being said, if your foundation is all set, and you practice enough simple to medium level problems, then you will not have trouble as far as this topic is concerned.

I heard that usually the test takers who are faring pretty well in the exam get probability questions. My friend got 4, I got 4 and i know of a couple of others who have gotten 4 questions as well. Word has it that GMAC is increasing the number of questions on the topic.

So, to sum up, discount probability at your own peril. It may come up and 4 questions are an awful lot to miss out on.

In a nutshell,GMAT only tests your basics so you don't have to look into hi-fi advanced problems......my suggestion would be to just brush through the basics and see their application...rest just keep an open mind and be confident that you can solve the question.......basically,you have to do away with your psychological fear about P&C and probability...and the rest will follow :)

I got one on the entire exam. If you can do the problems from the MGMAT guide, you will be able to do anything you see on the real thing. I can't be certain, but one thing I do believe is that if you see one on the exam, it is going to count. It probably isn't an experimental question.

i think i would have felt better not knowing that problems were experimental... i don't want to get into the habit of giving up too soon

are you talking about the problems from the mgmat book (word translations) or the ones from the question bank they have on their website?

since you've recently taken a gmat, which math topics would you suggest i work more on?

I'm referencing the word translations book. If I had to list the topics that were the most important. In order of importance they would be:

1) Translating word problems

2) Positive and negative data sufficiency questions

3) Geometry

Those are the three areas that gave me the most trouble.
