Is k positive?

(1) k is between -2 and 3 on the number line.
(2) k is between 1 and 2 on the number line.

Answer: B
Source: GMATPrep practice test
Solution:

Statement One Alone:

k is between -2 and 3 on the number line.

We see that k could be positive or negative; thus, we cannot answer the question. Statement one alone is not sufficient.

Statement Two Alone:

k is between 1 and 2 on the number line.

Since k is between 1 and 2, both of which are positive, we see that k must be positive.

Target question: Is k positive?

Statement 1: k is between -2 and 3 on the number line.
Let's TEST some values.
There are several values of k that satisfy statement 1. Here are two:
Case a: k = 1. In this case, the answer to the target question is YES, k IS positive
Case b: k = -1. In this case, the answer to the target question is NO, k is NOT positive
Since we cannot answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: k is between 1 and 2 on the number line.
In other words, k = 1.something
If k = 1.something, then the answer to the target question is YES, k IS positive
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT

Answer: B
