In 1959, the Nobel Prize was awarded to the Czech chemist and inventor Jaroslav Heyrovsky for discovering and the development of the polarographic method of analysis.
See individual answer choices for explanations.

Is "His discovery " correct
since america was discovered by columbus, we could say america's discovery . Can we say columbus' discovery ?

Hi,
This usage is perfectly fine. There is not ambiguity as it is stated his discovery of polygraphic method...
It is as good as Columbus' discovery of America and not just Columbus' discovery, which could be a bit ambiguous.

That is what my post was all about. If it is standalone 'X's discovery', it is discovery of X. The usage in this question is different. It is X's discovery of Y, which can only mean discovery of Y by X.

discovery and development, seems to be perfect in 4, compared with the rest!
