Is b the Median?

by winny » Tue Oct 11, 2011 9:51 am
Is 'b' the median of three numbers a, b and c?

1) a*c=b

2) a+c=b

Confused whether its C or E. Please help. Don't have the OA.

The two statements will be satisfied only a=b=c=0. So answer is C

for a = -1 and c = 1/2 will satisfy! a+c = a*c
so, numbers -1/2,-1,1/2 then median: -1
also a = 0, b = 0, c = 0, median = 0

Clearly,not sufficient.

Hence E!

Isn't this a Yes/No question. Doesn't it suffice to say that in both cases b is the median, as opposed to asking what is the value of b?

For -1,-1/2,1/2 - Median would be -1/2(b) and not -1(a)
Hence C

Oh, yeap...you are absolutely right @sl750. we no need to worry about the value.
Thanks for enlightening!

The two statements will be satisfied only a=b=c=0. So answer is C
Consider the following

Statement 1:
а*c=b
0*0=0 b=0 => median
2*2=4 b=4 => not
hence NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2:
a+c=b
same cases as (1) apply.
0+0=0 and 2+2=4
hence, NOT SUFFICIENT

Together,
b=a=c=0 hence yes,
b=4 a=c=2 hence, not

Thus,
[spoiler] E BOTH INSUFFICIENT.
