Is 600 good enough to get into Smith?

by willsv1 » Mon Nov 02, 2009 7:34 am
I applied for the earliest deadline for the full-time UMD Smith business school this past weekend with a GMAT score of 600. Verbal percentile 80, Math percentile 45. I don't know the essay scores yet.

My GPA is a 3.8 from a smaller midwest college with a double major in Marketing and Business Management and a Minor in Accounting. I graduated May 2008.

I have about 1 year working experience outside of college as a receptionist with a raise in pay last April. I really had a challenge not finding any relevant work for my major and after searching and applying for five months I took a receptionist job that I have been in for a year now. I do have internship experience in my field of choice.

I was involved in four clubs in college, all four of which I held officer positions, two of which I held the president position.

I recieved four awards in college;
-The College of Business ACBSP Undergraduate Student Leadership Award, 2008
-The Outstanding Student in Marketing Award, 2008
-The ETS Major Field Test Achievement award, 2008
-Named a Dana Scholar as a Top 10 Business Student at The University of Findlay, 2007-08

The GMAT range for current full-time students there is between 600-710. Do I honestly have any chance at getting in? Is there anything I can do to improve my chances at this point?

Dear willsv1,

You probably have an outside chance of being admitted at Smith. It all depends on how strong your essays and recommendations are and what the rest of the applicant pool looks like. Your high GPA will help mitigate your GMAT score. The other weakness will be your minimal work experience. Depending on how well you have maximized your role and displayed initiative, that will help to mitigate any concerns. The other key is your rationale for why you want to go to business school, why now and why Smith.

Try to think positively and in the event you are waitlisted, be sure to contact the school to determine what you can do to strengthen your application.

Good luck,
Lisa
