Is 4 < w < 7?

(1) w > 5
(2) w < 6

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

(1) w > 5
(2) w < 6
Target question:Is 4 < w < 7?

Statement 1: w > 5
There are many values of w that meet this condition. Here are two:
Case a: w = 6, in which means that it is the case that 4 < w < 7
Case b: w = 8, in which means that it is not the case that 4 < w < 7
Since we cannot answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: w < 6
There are many values of w that meet this condition. Here are two:
Case a: w = 5, in which means that it is the case that 4 < w < 7
Case b: w = 1, in which means that it is not the case that 4 < w < 7
Since we cannot answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statements 1 and 2 combined:
If we combine both statements, we get 5 < w < 6
If x has a value between 5 and 6, then it is definitely the case that 4 < w < 7
Since we can now answer the target question with certainty, the combined statements are SUFFICIENT

Answer = C
