A letter by Mark Twain, written in the same year that (= in which) The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published.
As per grammar rules 'that' may be used as an adverbial accusative i.e. That = on which, in which, at which.
For example : I remember the day that (=on which) he came.

Choice C, the best answer, is grammatically correct and its meaning is clear and precise.

ya its C, but cant understand Y as is wrong here,

explanation says, "that" much be used to introduce a relative clause. Now whats a relative clause ?

i know abt restrictive and non restrictive clause involving that nd which but this is new.

In case of AS, we need to make sure 2 things are comparable.

Option A) the same year as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn were published
were wrongly used with singular The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

For Comparison. See things in bold
Option B) the same year of publication as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Wrong Comparison.
Option D) the same year as he published The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Option E) the same year of publication as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

In option C, We use relative clause ie. the second part(present in bold) explains/describes/adds to the first part. I think its similar to restrictive clause.
Option C) the same year that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published

In sum, I think AS is wrong here as its a comparator and not something to introduce a clause ?

Can u think of another example where as would be wrong and that would be correct. Of course not an example involving years as is this one.
Cheers !!

We use relative clauses to give additional information about something without starting another sentence. By combining sentences with a relative clause, your text becomes more fluent and you can avoid repeating certain words.
The relative clause will follow one of these two patterns:

relative pronoun or adverb + subject + verb

relative pronoun as subject + verb

Ex:
1) Michelle screamed when she saw the spider that dangled from the one clean bathroom towel.
2) I don't like the table that stands in the kitchen.

Here, That = relative pronoun functioning as subject; dangled/stands = verb.

Clear, concise. Just what was needed. Thanks a bunch!
