IMO C. I was between C & E, but I felt E contradicted the premise of the argument & C has a reason for why people might not live longer even after volunteering (because of the disease that is temporarily masked)

IMO [spoiler]A:[/spoiler]

Option A shows that in the communities studied, women were much more likely to do regular volunteer work and most of the times women live longer than men. Hence even if volunteer doesn't boost longevity, the stastics will remain the same.

I would go for C

Even if the person has some disease, it wouldn't show up because the symptoms are masked.

IMO A.
We need to find an option that supports the conclusion but which would still be valid due to another fact (no volunteering). A does this. It is proven that Women live longer than Men. If more Women volunteer than men then it might seem that volunteering actually increases the longevity of life.

IMO = A

It goes to show that endorphins / volunteer work is not the cause of long life. People predisposed to long life were already volunteering.

The tone of the author suggests something very obvious. With that clue, I feel (A) has to be the answer.

i guess u might have got confused in the language of the last line...bcos i had to read it thrice, then i got it... :)

''the statistic would be what you would expect it to be...''

means that the statistic result that ''volunteers live longer than non volunteers'' , which we got from studying the particular community would give the same result even if that community were not volunteering..

hope you're getting it..

the question asks that even if we study the volunteering community or the nonvolounteering , we will get the result that they live longer!!

How is that possible?

because the study involved women volunteers,

reason:- women generally live more than men (damn...)) lol...

so even if these women were not volunteers or not volunteers we'd conclude that they i.e. 'women volunteers'' live more than men..
so the statistic would be the same for both ....

Here's why the answer is A:

Eliminate B; the number of young adults volunteering increasing has no impact on volunteering and longevity.

Eliminate C; if anything, this would decrease longevity, because masking symptoms implies that diseases may not even be treated until issues may have gotten out of hand.

Eliminate D; the passage doesn't mention anything about the frequency of volunteering.

Eliminate E; if volunteering is stressful, how can it improve longevity? In fact, it may even decrease longevity.

A makes sense, since here, volunteering clearly isn't doing the job of increasing longevity, but something else is.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T
