indian female with 720 gmat score (q 47 , v 42)

by ads09 » Thu Jun 06, 2013 11:02 pm
Hello,

Yesterday I wrote my gmat for the second time and scored 720(q 47 , v 42). The first time

I attempted the gmat on 27 feb 2013 and had scored 650( q47, v34). Although I am happy

with the improvement of an overall 70 points with 8 points increase in verbal I am

anxious because there is no improvement in the quant score and was wondering whether this

is going to hamper my chances of admission into top 20 schools.

My background: I am a 27 years old Indian female with 3 years of work experience in IT

industry. I also hold a ME degree in computer science from Cornell University. My GPA was

73.9 % in undergrads and in M.E it was 3.0 out of 4.3 . Sadly due to some family issues I

was not able to join a good IT company although I had offer from one and had to work in a

local company. Co curriculars are in moderate -good range although not extraordinary. I

volunteered in organizing the blood donation camps and have donated blood around 3 times

when I was in college and have won group discussion competitions at college level. I have

also participated in a marathon .Moreover I am a green peace India member from the past 4

years and learning jazz dance from the past one month.

With this background what are my chances of getting into top 20-25 schools and what are

my chances of getting a scholarship? Since my quant scores are not extraordinary should I

write gmat for the third time?

Thanks a lot in advance for going through my long post and for all the help :)

Hi,

KUDOS on remarkable improvement!! Don't worry much about quant. For your information the weight-age given to acads, GPA, GMAT & ECs is not more than 30%-35% of the b-school application. The key elements in b-school selection are essays and interviews. If you can position well in application essays by demonstrating leadership qualities & professional achievements and showcase maturity, ability to work with others & professionalism during the final interviews then you would stand a chance in top b-school(s). YOu must go ahead with list of your schools with present scores. You may also try your chances in b-school(s) by clicking https://tinyurl.com/k6r5w6x

Let me know in case of further queries. You may PM your details for discussion in length.

Regards
Erina

Don't fret about your quant score. 720 is a decent GMAT score and your engineering background will help offset concerns about your ability to deal with numbers.

Since it's already June, your efforts are better spent in finalizing your USP for your applications. This is a time taking process so you should start now to account for enough time for brainstorming on what makes most logical sense in your particular case.

Hi ads09,

It has been rightly pointed out that you should not fret your GMAT score. Another good thing about your GMAT score, besides 720, is that it is not lopsided between Verbal and Quant. You can rest assured that atleast your GMAT score will not pull you down in the application process.

I would recommend focusing on your applications as a 720 is a good GMAT score. Your IT and engineering background also demonstrates quantitative proficiency.

You have an excellent chance of admission to a Top 20 school. The chance of getting a scholarship depends on the program (you are more likely at the schools 20 through 30).

Good luck,
