Hello,
According to me we use "Whereas" (Limited to TWO) within sentences to contrast two ideas, and "Compared" (Could be N numbers) is use to find the similarities or differences between two or more.

i think the basic difference lies in the fact that "whereas" is used only with clauses ,however "compared to" is used to compare nouns or nouns+modifiers.
