We have "became" so Past perfect is wrong. A B out

Modifier error with C and E "Typical"

So, D !

Hi,

I would request experts to throw some light on usage of "Have had", "Has had" and "Had had".

Thanks

Quickest approach:

In A and B, the present tense verb have does not match the past tense of the non-underlined verb became. Eliminate A and B.

In C and E, it is unclear what is modified by the adverb typically. Typically seems to be incorrectly modifying the verb became, but the intended meaning of the sentence is not that Mary Baker Eddy typically became a distinguished writer. The intended meaning is quite opposite: that, when Mary became a distinguished writer, women typically had a narrow range of choices. Eliminate C and E.

The correct answer is D.
Hi! How is Typically modifying became???

I thought it is incorrectly modifying time in both the incorrect sentences. That's how I reached to the correct answer D.

Plz explain I am not that good in English.

Thanks :)

My approach:

When is used for a point of time, not for duration/period of time.

Typically (adverb) should be close to the part of speech it modifies. (except noun or pronoun).

Verb should be in past tense, not in present perfect.

D has:
AT a time WHEN
Typically modifies had
Tense is simple past.

All other choices have 1 or more errors.

Let's look at the non-underlined part of the question - it is in the past tense. So options A and B have a tense mismatch error and are incorrect. The choice is now between C, D and E.

The use of the word 'typical' in this sentence is to indicate a characteristic common to women of a particular period. What was this characteristic? That women had only a narrow range of choices. Therefore, 'typically' must be placed as close as possible to what it modifies, viz 'had a narrow... choices'. Only option D does this.

If you disregard the modifier in option C, it reads thus: 'Typically... Mary Baker Eddy became a distinguished writer...' - why is this typical? This does not make sense.
There is meaning ambiguity in E. How is Mary Eddy's achievements typical for a time during which women had few choices? This is not typical at all - this is something that stands out!

Thus, C and E are both incorrect, leaving us with the right answer D.

Thought it would be good to highlight a couple of things:

1. The issue with A and B is not have, but have had (a present perfect). It is important to understand that there might be cases (several of them in fact) when such usage is correct (a present perfect in the first half and simple past in the second half). For example:

Despite the fact that women have always had a narrow range of choices, Baker Eddy still became a distinguished writer and the founder, architect, and builder of a growing church.

However, since the sentence is talking about a time in the past (in a period of time), simple past is an appropriate usage.

2. Generally time is modified by when on GMAT; at least for starters, it provides another clue how D is appropriate.

I choose answer D for this question.
All the other choices are wordy and awkward for me.

Can anybody explain how to get to D between C D and E
(C) Typically, during a time when women - this reads like a generalization to me. For example, "Typically, during a practice exam, I do well, but today I did not do well"
(D) At a time when women typically - OA
(E) Typically in a time in which women - time is better used with "when" rather than "in which"
