Hi,
Many universities offer different dual degree programs, and many cases those make much sense. Suppose someone has a career aspiration in social development field, it makes perfect sense for him to take a dual degree in Public Policy etc.
May I know the different implications of applying for a dual degree?
1. Does the Ad-Com value more to the candidates who are applying for MBA+ degree than those who apply only for MBA?
2. Suppose you are selected for MBA , but not for the other degree will they reject your candidacy? (or, vice versa)
3. For Dual Degree, are you going to pay more?
4. For Dual degree, are you going to study longer?
5. How is the post MBA scenario for the dual degree holders compared to only MBA guys?
6. Is the chance of getting to a high B school(Like Stanford-GSB, Ross, Kellogg, SOM) increases/ decreases if you apply for a dual degree?
7. ANy other facts about dual degree program from B schools like above taht I am missing here.

Regards,
Manjit

Hi Manjitzing:

I'm answering as both a Harvard dual degree as well as an admissions coach. My answers to your questions are below:

1. Does the Ad-Com value more to the candidates who are applying for MBA+ degree than those who apply only for MBA?

No. Joint degree candidates are evaluated separately by each school you apply to.

2. Suppose you are selected for MBA , but not for the other degree will they reject your candidacy? (or, vice versa)
No. You will just go to the one school you got into.

3. For Dual Degree, are you going to pay more?

You are going to spend an extra year in school (unless you do the Stanford MBA/M.Ed.) so you will be paying for three years worth of tuition rather than two.

4. For Dual degree, are you going to study longer?

Yes, you will study for three years total.

5. How is the post MBA scenario for the dual degree holders compared to only MBA guys?

You will be well positioned to apply to a variety of positions within the private, public, and non-profit sectors but you will also be challenged to rationalize your commitment to the particular job you are seeking. For example, my joint degree peers and I were often challenged when we applied to private sector jobs. They would often ask us things like, "But why aren't you out saving the world? Do you really want to work here?" and when we applied to non-profit jobs they questioned our commitment to that sector. You'll have to be very clear and confident when applying to jobs, but you'll be qualified and prepared to serve in a variety of positions.

6. Is the chance of getting to a high B school(Like Stanford-GSB, Ross, Kellogg, SOM) increases/ decreases if you apply for a dual degree?
No, applying to a dual or joint degree does not increase or decrease your chance of getting admitted to a top school.

7. ANy other facts about dual degree program from B schools like above taht I am missing here.

There's lots to know. Many schools have specific fellowships for joint degree students. I received one at HBS and it was a combination of funding and extracurricular enrichment such as visits from leaders in the private, public, and non-profit sectors.

I am a huge advocate of joint degrees, but you should apply to these programs with a clear idea of why you need both degrees and what you plan to do with them.

Best of luck,
