illegal software

by maihuna » Fri Aug 21, 2009 12:05 am
A recent survey found that more computers than copies of computer programs were purchased by Germans last year. The best interpretation of this finding is that the practice of illegally duplicating commercial computer programs is widespread among Germans.
Each of the following, if true, would counter some reasonable objection to the interpretation advanced above EXCEPT:
(A) Few German computer users write their own computer programs.
(B) There are few free noncommercial computer programs available in Germany.
(C) Some Germans purchase computers outside of Germany for use in Germany, and such purchases were counted in the survey.
(D) The typical German computer user has several commercially written computer programs on his or her computer.
(E) Many Germans legally make duplicates of commercial computer programs, but such duplicates were counted as purchased copies in the survey.

IMO A
the reason is: few Germans write their own operational software that means rest use the the software that is not written by them ,therefore they need to buy or use pirated version. As it says that they donot buy much that means they copy pitated version. That means it is not opposing the conclusion of the question stem.Thats the required answer.

i think b

sounds like we need to weaken the interpretation EXCEPT negates the counter which is like a strengthen.

there are few free software available so it doesnt mean everyone is illegally copying

Interpretation --> germans use pirated softwares
-->objection ---> germans dont use pirated softwares
counter the objection--> germans use pirated S/W
except --> one choice which says germans dont use pirated S/W 4 choices say they do

A.) counters the objection
B.) talks about non commercial S/W -- out of scope as argument talks about duplicating commercial S/W
c.) A german will remain a german whether he is in germany or outside germany.. If the argument had said that the practice is widespread in germany then this would have been a contender ...but it says the practice of pirating is widespread among germans...

d.)clearly says germans use pirated S/W
e.) correct --> argument..germans illegally use pirated S/W --this choice says they do it legally...
best choice and henc e the answer...

can we have the OA???

Yes E is the only option that says that number of illegal copies can be even more as even those copies that were made legally has been counted in commercial software vs computer game.

Let us say it this way: 100 computers and 50 windows are sold(assuming windows is the only choice). What it says is that in 50 some were legal duplicates copies. So we know for sure that remaining 5o computers r running on illegal software which supports the argument.....

E seems to be the best choice here
