IESE Business School

Why I choose IESE Business School?

I started my business school research in 2008, when the US economy was in deep troubles. I was not inclined to US schools because of economic crisis and hence I choose Europe. LBS and INSEAD were two famous schools in Europe. But, given my strong background in finance I wanted to do a general management MBA and explore internship opportunities because I wanted to change career. IESE was fulfilling all my criterias. To know more about IESE I decided to attend the information session in Mumbai, where I understood the program and career opportunities post MBA. After speaking to some more students I was convinced about the impact IESE MBA can have on my career and I decided to apply.

The following were the main reasons I choose IESE:

General management program: Given my strong background in finance, I wanted to do a general management MBA, where I wanted to learn how to manage the building blocks of business. IESE is a general management MBA program, where the fist year is core and one can tailor the course in second year by taking electives.

Diversity and small batch size: IESE is a truly international school with student representation from more than 50 countries. The diversity will expose me to working in teams from different cultures and build strong networks. The small batch size enables me to build strong relation with professors and students, which is what really matters at the end of MBA.

Case study method: All my life I have learned by lecture or self study. Now I was making one of the biggest investment of my life and I wanted to learn the non-traditional way and hence I decided to learn by case studies, where every student brings his/her own experience to the class to make it interesting. Further, I thought it will enable me to gather a breadth and depth of experience necessary for successful career transition. It will expose me to different perspectives and improve my negotiation skills, which will also teach how to handle the demands of consumers in the dynamic world.

Finally, I wanted to work in Europe because US was still struggling with the crisis. IESE is a very well known brand in Europe and has good networks with many companies, so I felt it will be easy to find a job. IESE also offered the option to learn Spanish, which is a priceless asset.

Apart from the above mentioned points I was impressed by IESE's mission to develop leaders who aspire to have a positive, deep and lasting impact on people, firms and society through their professionalism, integrity and spirit of service.

Did you take into account other renowned schools in Spain, such as IE and ESADE, and believe that IESE outperforms those two?

As far as working in the Europe is concerned, have you taken into account the language barrier as so many different languages are spoken?
If Spain is where you intend to work after graduation, it appears to be quite unfortunate as Spain currently has the highest unemployment rate (20%) amongst European countries.

Hi,
Now I am in IESE and I firmly believe that IESE outperforms the other schools. But my views are biased. Yes - I did some research about IE and ESADE but IESE was more appealing to me in every aspect -career opportunities, case study method, professor's quality and community. So IESE was a clear winner for me.

Working in Europe and language hindrance:
"¢ This is an interesting argument and here is my take on it. When I came to IESE, I had no knowledge of any European language. But IESE offered me the opportunity to learn Spanish in a formal set up. I decided to join the classes and my Spanish has improved. So that is one more plus for IESE.
"¢ Language may act as hindrance for some jobs in Europe. For example, if you are looking for a career in consulting, you need to have local language skills. However, if you are looking for a career in corporate finance, then language may not be a big hindrance because there is limited interaction with external clients. Hence it is crucial to be clear about your career goals.
"¢ I am not sure if I intend to work long term in Spain. Agree that there is unemployment in Spain, but still there are many opportunities for MBA's if you have the right skill sets. So, it is a matter of selling your skills at the right shop.
