reason : wealthier is better than more wealthy.
better-educated and more polished are placed correctly .

One problem i see is that "E" seems to be incomplete.

Should there be a "WAS" at the end of statement E?
Is it just me or does every 1 feel so ??
I agree that there should be a "was" at the end of 'E'

i feel B is wrong because,

"The MAN was aware, that HE was a small-town midwesterner" is the clause, now look at B.
It says WHO had been thrust..

Now as far as my Understanding goes,

"The Man was aware" takes care of the fact "that he had been"

as the man is aware that he is thrusted into a world, so the usage of "who had been" makes "B" wrong.

Also another point,
B is a little more "PASSIVE" in saying "a world that was dominated by more wealthy"
E is more "ACTIVE" in saying "a world dominated by wealthier".

folks correct me if i am wrong..
Why is "who" wrong?
