High protein diet

by neeti2711 » Tue Jul 25, 2017 7:06 am
Isotopes in the recently excavated bones of a 14-year-old girl from the Jamestown archaeological site indicate she had eaten a high-protein diet, so was probably the daughter of a gentleman, not a maidservant.

(A) she had eaten a high-protein diet, so was probably the daughter of a gentleman, not a maidservant.
(B) that she ate a high protein diet, so probably had been the daughter of a gentleman, and not a maidservant.
(C) that she had eaten a high protein diet, so was probably the daughter of a gentleman, and not a maidservant's.
(D) she ate a high-protein diet, so was probably the daughter of a gentleman, and had not been a maidservant.
(E) she had eaten a high-protein diet, thereby had probably been the daughter of a gentleman, not a maidservant's.

OA: A

Please explain the following:

a. shouldn't indicate be followed by 'that'
b. the chronological order - what happened first - the eating or being the daughter?

What's the source for this one? It appears problematic to me...

It's fine to write: indicate + noun phrase
It's fine to write: indicate + that + clause

But writing indicate + clause without "that," as the OA does here, seems to be improper usage.

Hm. I'll pass this along to the powers that be, but my take is that the OA should be tweaked. (And I'll do some digging through official questions to see if such a construction has appeared in an OA.)

Firms traditionally claim that they downsize (i.e., make permanent personnel cuts) for economic reasons, laying off supposedly unnecessary staff in an attempt to become more efficient and competitive. Organization theory would explain this reasoning as an example of the "economic rationality" that it assumes underlies all organizational activities. There is evidence that firms believe they are behaving rationally whenever they downsize; yet recent research has shown that the actual economic effects of downsizing are often negative for firms
